Biel/Bienne-Demain

A small prototype created at Smart City Day 2025 in Biel/Bienne Switzerland.

The intent is to create a platform for urban planning insights with a public AI interface.

I started by visiting the opendata.swiss organization and collecting some open datasets of the city.

From the website I was able to download the latest publications about construction projects (Baupublikationen) in the city. Converting a few extracts to Markdown, I got an appreciation for what questions people might have, and made some targeted sample prompts.

Next I created a basic Gradle app with a map of the city and some example prompts. This is connected to the Public AI developer interface, using the Apertus 8B model. It currently shows some of the example prompts. The goal is that the map centers on the construction object being discussed.

An alternative way to do this, is an MCP server - also known as "tool" - that could be embedded within an open chat interface like chat.publicai.co (OpenWebUI).

I finally started to research what kind of benchmarks exist in the area of urban development, and stumbled upon the Urban Spatiotemporal Reasoning Benchmark (USTBench), which would be an excellent test for the Apertus model. I have collected a small sample of the dataset for further investigation.
